Was it the night Christian appeared to Sun and Lapidus? I recall Locke disappearing when Ben went to go summon the Smoke Monster and who knows how long he was gone. both incidences occured at night if I am not mistaking. So this could be it. Also we have seen Smokey approach Juliet and Kate at the sonic fence and appeared as 3 seperate entties so it might be possible for it to appear in more than one place at a time and also the 3 men Eko killed appeared before him in the jungle as well. I also believe that was an apparition of Smokey. If I am not mistaking there was a physicl exchange between Eko and those guys. Not to say if you are going crazy you cant think you are being physiclly touched but I believe it was Smokey
I forgot about about how the monster did separate into more small black clouds, so it could as well locke is the monster, i'll be damned disappointed if locke just turned into black smoke, he's one of the best characters.
Its pretty significant that the Anti_locke can't kill Jacob but he or the smoke monster can kill anyone else and it takes little old Ben to kill Jacob. Theres a major reason for this.

But remember when Said killed boy Ben and RA took him and said something like - "He will never be the same - he will lose his inocense" Whatever that meant seems like it was something significant. So WHO or WHAT Ben is, may not be "little'ol Ben". He must be something or someone else. No? Was he someone special, after RA di what he did to bring him alive, who had to kill Jacob?
Remember - dead is dead.
Have you guys thought/discussed that maybe MiW and MiB is perhaps more a metaphor? Maybe it's a battle between time/death (MiB) vs fate (MiW)? Maybe they don't mean killing in the literal sense as that's easy to understand. So fate leaves the island and goes to work with these kids that later come together to "save" the island.
If MiB wanted to kill Jacob in the real sense he could have poisoned Jacobs fish filet.
PS> I like to call the black smoke the Grim Reaper. The judge of who lives and dies as it seems.

Yes I think all of the characters are an allegory for something. Greed, Faith, Science, Jealousy, etc.

Do we know for a fact Ben was killed? If he was than why was RA surprised to see the Island bring someone back from the dead as in JL?
