I honestly dont think there really was an actual sickness. I am thinking the Quarantine sign was to keep the recruits contained in the stations and prevent them from going out and exploring the Island and either encountering a Hostile or Smokey.
Especially in the Swan Station where pushing the button was key to the survival of the Island.
I could be wrong but I dont think the blood test done on them was nothing more than just mind games or if theywere checking for something it wasnt for a life threatening sickness.
I say this because the Losties were on the Island for some time prior to being tested so if they were infected with something it will have spread throughout the Island or anyone they came in contact with.
TPTB might have done this in case they wanted to add more to the storyline. It may also be something that they just figured wasnt going to be that important to the over all story and dropped it to focus on other things.
Just guesses. I would like to know though what was the purpose of the blood draws, if any
