perhaps that is why Widmore wants to get back so badly is because he wants to die but is unable to since the island wont let him like it wouldnt let Michael, at least until he fufilled some purpose the island had for him.
But does Widmore really want to go back to the island or just have control of it from the distance?
He believes himself to be exiled,but if he wanted to go back he has had plenty of opportunity to do so,especially on his own freighter.
What about this.. In "The Shape of Things To Come" when Ben stalks into Widmore's bedroom, Widmore says something about "nightmares". Perhaps these nightmares were of things happening to him in the past done to him by Locke, Sawyer, etc. (i.e. taking him prisoner in the woods, etc.)
So... if this were true, then they ARE changing Widmore's memories in the future. It is very possible the flashes back to 1954 were occuring just before the time when the conversation between Ben and Widmore occurred.

I personally think Widmores nightmares started not long before he was visited by Ben. I dont think these nightmares are coming from Jacob but from Beachboy or Smokie. Everything Ben talked about he called them dreams and JL we can say had dreams or visions which I also dont think genertared from Jacob but Beachboy. Beachboy is in opposition to Jacob and Widmore is in opposition to what the Isalnd wants. I think Jacob is truly for the benefit of the Island and sees things positively where Beachboy doesnt. Beachboy sees no hope in mankind and as Imentioned before he brings out there eveil tendencies and i they dont fit into his plan he kills them or allows them to die.

This same thing happened to Desmond, but he knew it was a memory and not just a dream.
